Allah, glorious and exalted is He, revealed the Book and the Wisdom to Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Thus any work concerned with this latter will certainly be worthy of our attention, especially one that has gained the respect of the people of knowledge throughout the ages.
Many have made commentaries on the Hikam of Ibn ‘Ata’illah al-Iskandari, but the one before us by Ahmad ibn ‘Ajibah has a special clarity and directness about it. And this compilation by Abdalhaqq Bewley from the Iqadh al-Himam comes directly from the very tradition of the two Shaykhs. Wisdom, the lost riding beast of the mu’min, can be said to have returned home, and in our age and circumstances could anything be more needed than that?
